Summer Community Engaged Writing Projects? Register for the Pen to Paper Writing Retreat

If your summer writing list is long and your research needs to be disseminated you need a writing retreat!

Pen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time, space, and resources to guide faculty, professional staff, graduate students, and community partners working on manuscripts related to service-learning and community engagement. The two and a half-day retreat provides participants with time to discuss ideas with and receive feedback from editors, share ideas with peers, and write.

Each year attendance is intentionally kept to a minimum in order to foster personal connections the small group provides the space participants need to focus on engaged scholarship. Registration and information here

2019 SENCER Summer Institute Early Registration Ends April 30

The SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Summer Institute (SSI) will be hosted by Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio on August 1-4, 2019.

SSI brings together formal and informal educators, learners, and community and government partners for a rich mix of plenaries, workshops, and other sessions that focus not only on what students should learn, but how that learning might be accomplished.

The theme for SSI 2019 is Partnership Power: STEM Learning as a Force for Civic Renewal. In addition to their core focus on effective pedagogy and course design, the Institute program will explore collaborations and partnerships that advance STEM learning and build civic capacity for addressing the critical challenges facing our democracy.

NASPA Conference and Professional Development Scholarships


Through the generous support of the NASPA Foundation and their donors, NASPA is announcing a new scholarship for NASPA's professional development programs. The purpose of these scholarships is to provide access to professional development opportunities for individuals that might not otherwise have the financial means to participate. The professional development events available for this application cycle are the following:

· 2019 Assessment, Persistence, and Data Analytics Conference

· 2019 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting

· 2019 Closing the Achievement Gap Conference

· 2019 First-generation Student Success Conference

· 2019 Student Financial Wellness Conference

Complete applications will include:

· Completed Budget Template with necessary backup.

Recipients of the scholarships must produce pre-engagement and post-engagement blogs/essays/social media posts, as well as volunteer at least two hours during the selected conference. Specific engagement and volunteer activities will be confirmed with the selected recipients.

The conference will take place October 23-25, 2019. The theme of this year's conference is Celebrating the "I" in IARSLCE: Researching Engagement Across Borders.

March 13th Webinar: Organizing Against Violence Pedagogy Project

Imagining America (artists and scholars in public life, is launching a new initiative, an online “teaching and learning circle.” The first program of this initiative is a webinar, offered on March 13th at 1pm EST.

”Our first webinar will feature critical dialogue and creative group work with Kush Patel (2016-2018 IA PAGE Co-Director) and Mallika Bose's (Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Penn State) "Organizing Against Violence" project. The “Organizing Against Violence” pedagogy project was initiated at the 2018 IA National Gathering in Chicago, IL. The aim of Patel and Bose’s project is to create a network of critical pedagogues, engage in collective writing, and co-create a toolkit for distribution through Imagining America and related media. In the upcoming webinar, participants will reflect on their teaching practice and its relationship to the interconnected violence of colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy within affiliated institutions and communities. The webinar will involve live group writing, where participants will draft brief position statements to unpack their own institutional biographies and approaches to teaching, learning, and community engaged practice.”

Call for Undergraduate Papers at the IUJSL

An exciting new opportunity for undergraduates to be published in a peer-reviewed journal is available! The International Undergraduate Journal for Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change (IUJSL), which is dedicated to providing undergraduate students a venue to discuss their service-learning projects and experiences, has issued a call for papers by undergraduate students.

The journal considers 3 types of articles:

  1. Articles that discuss the development of a service-learning project and the impact of the project on the community served

  2. A case study of a service learning project

  3. A reflection on service-learning and the development of personal leadership

Each article will be reviewed by selected readers and the member of the editorial board.  Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced, excluding block quotations which should be typed single-spaced, and references.  To ensure anonymity, author’s names and affiliation should appear on a separate cover page.  Articles should not exceed 15 pages.  Authors should follow APA format.

Submissions should be sent in Word format. Do not add headers or page numbers. Submissions can be sent by email to: Ned Scott Laff, Ph.D. (ned.laff@gmail).
